The quality of recycled EPS

Progetto Università del Sannio

Research and development

The research project conducted in collaboration with the Department of Engineering, University of Sannio, and with the Second University in Naples is part of the research and development field of de.com.  The constant improvement of production processes, in addition to an updated knowledge and push towards technological innovation are staples of de.com.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the quality of manufactured products with recycled EPS inside the de.com plants.

The specificity of the de.com recycling process is very mechanical (for grinding, shredding and compaction), during which the molecule of polystyrene undergoes no chemical degradation.  A recycling technique that permits the maximization of recycled items, without reducing the structural quality.

The study conducted by the University in Sannio and by the Second University of Napoli indicated that, independently from the presence and quality of the recycled items, the mechanical properties and thermodynamic properties of the print are linked solely to the density of the object.

In other words, under certain conditions of established density, you can use high amounts of recycled EPS and get the same properties as in new materials.

A confirmation of the possibility of industrial reuse of EPS that puts de.com at the forefront of the recovery and recycling of expanded polystyrene foam.
